The buying has begun.

The Sundance Film Festival kicks off tonight with its first screenings, but Paramount Vantage (yes, it still exists) announced this afternoon that it had snapped up worldwide rights to Davis Guggenheim’s ‘Waiting for Superman.’ The new documentary examines -- and indicts -- the American educational system and its seemingly intractable problems.

The U.S. Documentary Competition entry, which premieres here Friday, was financed by Participant Media, which financed Guggenheim’s last film, the Oscar-winning 2006 documentary ‘An Inconvenient Truth.’

Paramount Vantage, which also distributed ‘An Inconvenient Truth,’ will domestically release ‘Waiting for Superman’ in the fall. But what’s left of the distribution and marketing entity is anybody’s guess, as Paramount laid off almost all of the specialty division’s staff more than a year ago, after the Paramount Vantage bombs ‘American Teen,’ ‘Black Snake Moan’ and ‘Son of Rambow,’ all of which showed at Sundance.
