Gold: Trading now at $1,587 per ounce, up 1.6% from Tuesday. Dow Jones industrial average: Trading now at 12,606.61, up 1.3% from Tuesday.

Good morning. Comments from Ben Bernanke and data from China have penetrated the investor malaise of the last few days and sent stocks up.

Overheard. The government may have listened in on phone calls with as many as 100 different investment managers on Wall Street during their ongoing investigation of insider trading.

Madoff checks coming. The trustee overseeing the recovery of Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme money may be ready to actually start sending out checks to some of the victims.
