Geithner on reform. Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner will give a speech Monday afternoon in New York, beginning a round of appearances by members of the Obama administration pushing the financial reform legislation.

Deal-making up. July saw the most merger and acquisition activity of the year, according to Dealogic, confounding some who had expected the slowing economy to hit this work.

Goldman’s troubles. Goldman Sachs defended the way it valued American International Group’s assets during the financial crisis -- decisions that helped speed the collapse of the insurance giant. On a more local scale, neighbors are angry about the way Goldman is changing the neighborhood into which it recently moved.
