A Bell Gardens food supply company is recalling 89,531 pounds of granulated chicken bouillon products, according to the Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The bouillon, from Wei-Chuan USA Inc., originated from ‘an unapproved source’ and was deemed ineligible for import into the country. After being notified by Customs and Border Protection, food safety agents couldn’t determine if the preparation of the poultry ingredients in the bouillon met federal regulations or an equivalent foreign inspection system.

The 1-pound, 2.2-pound and 5-pound cans and packets of the bouillon were distributed to retailers in California, Illinois, New Jersey, Texas and Washington. There have been no reports of illness.

Wei-Chuan was founded in 1972 and also has offices in Jersey City, N.J., San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta and Houston, as well as a technical facility in Tennessee. The company, whose name roughly translates into ‘Flavor-All,’ caters mostly to a clientele of Chinese immigrants. The five red balls in its logo represent sweetness, sourness, bitterness, saltiness and pungent taste.
