Passersby found the body of a woman face down in the sand in west Newport Beach, police said Monday.

It was unclear how the woman died. Police said the woman was in her 20s.

Authorities were called to the area near Balboa Peninsula’s Lifeguard Tower 71 early Monday morning about 6 a.m. at West Oceanfront and Highland Street and determined the woman was dead, said Newport Beach Police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe.
