An ex-teacher in San Diego County was sentenced Wednesday to a year in jail after pleading guilty to having sex with the former student who impregnated her.

But the judge ruled that Kelly Watson, 34, can be released in April when she is due to deliver her baby.

Watson admitted beginning a sexual relationship with the boy when he was 16. Now 17, he wants to help raise their child, prosecutors said.

San Diego County Superior Court Judge Laura Halgren ruled that the teenager can be present when the baby is born but that otherwise he and Watson must have no contact.

Watson began the relationship when she was a teacher at the New Haven Residential School in Vista, which works with troubled and at-risk students. Later she became a special education teacher at Oceanside High.

She is no longer employed as a teacher.
