An independent committee backing Kevin James bought $170,000 in ad time, pushing outside spending on Los Angeles’ mayoral contest past $3 million, according to city disclosure documents made public Wednesday.

Better Way L.A., a super PAC backing James’ bid, will continue airing a television spot that warns that the city is on the brink of bankruptcy, the election of Wendy Greuel, Eric Garcetti or Jan Perry would mean the continuation of the status quo, and that Kevin James is the only choice to reform City Hall.

It is also airing a radio spot.

The group was running out of money in the final days before the primary election until it received an infusion of cash from a Texas billionaire last week.
