Deputy shoots suspect after vehicle pursuit

A short high-speed chase that began Saturday in a McDonald’s drive-through in Stanton ended after authorities hit the suspect’s vehicle and shot and wounded the driver, authorities said.

The incident began when deputies were dispatched shortly after 3 a.m. to a McDonald’s near the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Katella Avenue, said Lt. Joe Balicki of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. A man was reported to be passed out in his vehicle in the drive-through lane, he said.

The suspect was “extremely intoxicated” and “became uncooperative” when approached by deputies, Balicki said.

The suspect fled from the parking lot and struck a deputy’s marked patrol vehicle, Balicki said. He drove north on Beach Boulevard and turned onto Ball Road, Balicki said.

Deputies stopped the man’s vehicle by striking its back quarter panel, causing it to spin out, near the intersection of Ball and Gilbert Street in Anaheim, Balicki said.

One deputy fired at the suspect, who was struck, said Sheriff’s Capt. Steve Doan. The man sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital, Doan said. Once the suspect is released from the hospital, he will be taken to Orange County Jail, Doan said.
