Riverside County authorities are investigating the slaying of two women killed while walking in rural Nuevo on Monday evening.

Deputies were called to the 29000 block of Central Street shortly after 5 p.m. and found the women, who had ‘obvious traumatic injuries,’ the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said. One woman was pronounced dead at the scene; the other died of her injuries at an area hospital.

Coroner’s officials identified the women as Maria Gonzalez, 51, and Connie Gonzalez, 25, both of Nuevo, which is about six miles east of Perris. KTLA-TV reported that the victims were mother and daughter.

No other information was immediately available about the incident.

Authorities searched the area for a suspect seen running from the location but did not find the man. Witnesses said the man appeared to be between the ages of 18 and 20 and was wearing dark clothing.

Investigators ask anyone with information about the incident to call detectives at (760) 393-3500 or (951) 791-3400.
