Officers pursued the suspect on surface streets and the freeway before the chase ended at 22nd Street and Broadway about 1:20 p.m.

Following a brief foot chase, officers confronted the suspect and an officer-involved shooting was reported. Gardena officials would not elaborate on the specific circumstances of the shooting nor did they comment on how the suspect’s actions led to the use of deadly force.

The suspect, who was taken into custody at the scene, was transported to a local hospital, where he was being treated for unspecified injuries.

The investigation into the shooting is being handled by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Gardena police said.
