Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies are searching in Malibu for a carjacking suspect who fled into the hills early Monday morning after escaping when an officer tried to handcuff him.

Sheriff’s officials said they set up a perimeter in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Corral Canyon Road to look for the suspect, who was not immediately identified. The incident unfolded around 2:45 a.m. when a deputy patrolling the area saw a car parked by the side of the road with a man sleeping inside. After the vehicle came up as stolen on law enforcement computer records, the deputy attempted to handcuff the man. But the suspect broke free and fled.

Sheriff’s officials said they waited for first light Monday to start an intense search for the suspect, who they later determined was connected to a possible kidnapping and carjacking case in another jurisdiction.

The deputy who tried to arrest the suspect was treated for a minor injury received in the altercation, authorities said.
