Councilman Bill Rosendahl, partner make relationship official

Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl and his longtime partner, Hedi El Kholti, have made their relationship official on paper, Rosendahl said this week.
The pair, which has been been together for 17 years, registered this month as domestic partners, Rosendahl said. That gives them access to many of the same rights that married spouses enjoy, including healthcare and inheritance benefits, although most federal benefits are excluded.
Rosendahl, who announced last year he was undergoing treatment for cancer and would not to seek a third term in office, said the couple are going to wait to celebrate their union until after the U.S. Supreme Court delivers its much-anticipated ruling on gay marriage, which is expected by late June.
A longtime champion of gay rights, Rosendahl says he is optimistic about the rulings.
‘I’m going to be excited when the courts rule in our favor and I can give him a big hug and a kiss and know that his life and mine are forever on equal footing,’ Rosendahl said.
‘I love him,’ he said of El Kholti, a literary editor who helps run an independent publishing house. ‘And that love should be appreciated by all the systems in our country.’
