Police arrested the next-door neighbor of a 94-year-old woman in Yuba City who was found dead this week.

Yuba City police allege that 20-year-old Michael Patrick Alexander knew Leola Shreves. Sometime last week, he allegedly broke into her house and “launched a violent and savage attack,” police said in a statement.

Family members found Shreves dead later in the week, according to Fox 40.

Evidence found at Shreves’ home linked Alexander to the slaying, but police did not provide any details, including exactly how she died.

Police cited “financial gain’ as a motive.

Yuba City police arrested Alexander on Friday morning.

CBS30 reported that neighors were shocked by the killing.

“I will miss her very much. She was a real good friend to me,” Colleen Walker told that station. “I’d bake cookies and take them over and have a cup of coffee, and we’d talk about the kids.’
