A Metrolink train struck and killed a man just east of the Northridge station, officials say.

The incident occurred about 5:03 p.m. and involved Train 117 on the Ventura County Line, said spokeswoman Delana Gbenekama.

She had no immediate details about the condition of the person or what led to the incident. But the Los Angeles Fire Department is reporting that a man died after being struck by the westbound train where the tracks cross Wilbur Avenue. The train was held at the scene pending an investigation, according to the Fire Department.

Gbenekama said the person was in an area where pedestrians are not allowed.

Train traffic was quickly affected. Train 118 was scheduled to terminate at Chatsworth, and passengers were to be transferred onto buses, which would make all stops leading to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. Heading the other way, trains 119, 121 and 123 are to terminate at Van Nuys. Once again, passengers will transfer to buses and reconnect with a train at Chatsworth.
