The death of a 23-year-old Ohio man on Santa Cruz Island appears to have been accidental, although authorities said they were continuing to investigate the matter.

Christopher Anthony Mondiek of Dublin was found on the beach at Yellowbanks Anchorage about 8 a.m. Tuesday, after a search that began over the weekend, according to a news release from Channel Islands National Park.

‘Investigators believe his death was caused by a fall from one of the cliffs,’ the release said.

National Park Service staff began searching for the man when they were contacted on Sunday and told that Mondiek had not returned from an overnight trip to the island.

On Monday, a helicopter search was called off because of bad weather. Search and rescue crews began looking again Tuesday morning and found Mondiek’s body below a steep cliff, authorities said.
