Authorities on Wednesday identified a 22-year-old motorist killed in a Christmas Day shooting in East Los Angeles.

Favian Macias was identified by the L.A. County coroner’s office.

Police believe he was shot as he was driving on South Hicks Avenue near Los Angeles Community Hospital. The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. After he was hit, Macias crashed into a lamppost a short distance away at East Olympic Boulevard and South Dittman Avenue.

He was shot multiple times and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. His girlfriend was in the car with him and was uninjured.

As of Wednesday morning there were no arrests, said Sgt. Rich Pena of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

Macias’ girlfriend, who declined to give her name, told KTLA-TV they were looking for a parking space when he was shot. When she asked if he was OK, Macias said he was fine; then the car smashed into the lamppost.

“I have no idea, I wish I knew,” she said when asked about a possible motive. “It breaks my heart knowing, you know? And on Christmas Day?”
