2 dead deer found in Glendale canyons

Authorities said Tuesday that they have not confirmed whether a dead deer -- the second such find in the canyons of East Glendale recently -- was killed by a mountain lion or coyote.

A Glendale resident found the remains of the small deer Tuesday morning in the 3300 block of Dunsmere Road, near Chevy Chase Canyon Park and not far from Fern Lane where, according to police, the first deer was found dead on Dec. 7.

“At this point, we have no confirmed sightings of coyotes or mountain lions killing deer,” said Ricky Whitman, spokeswoman for the Pasadena Humane Society, which provides animal control services for Glendale. “We don’t know if [the deer] was killed by a coyote or mountain lion, or if it was already dead and wildlife opportunistically took advantage of that.”

Glendale police advised residents last week that they had found mountain lion footprints in the same area where the first dead deer was found on Fern Lane.

That same week, a resident reported spotting a mountain lion walking south in Glenoaks Canyon.

While mountain lions and coyotes do live in the Glendale hills, Whitman said determining how a deer was killed depends on several factors, including the condition of the carcass.

Authorities advised residents to keep their pets and children indoors and to trim shrubbery to discourage visits from wildlife.
