Soldier from Southern California killed in Afghanistan

A U.S. Army soldier from Southern California has been killed in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Saturday.

Sgt. Clinton Ruiz, 22, who grew up in Murrieta in southern Riverside County, was killed Thursday  when his unit was attacked by small-arms fire in Khas Uruzgan in Oruzgan province.

Ruiz was assigned to the 9th Military Information Support Battalion (Airborne), 8th Military Information Support Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C. He graduated from Murrieta Valley High School in 2008 and enlisted in the Army in 2009 as a psychological operations specialist. He deployed to Afghanistan last month.

Ruiz is survived by his wife, Kira Ortega, and son, Caleb. His home address was listed as Poway in San Diego County.
