Manhattan Beach police officer hospitalized after crash

July 12, 2012 |  9:04 am

All lanes of Sepulveda Boulevard from Manhattan Beach to Artesia boulevards were expected to be shut down until 10 a.m. after a Manhattan Beach police cruiser collided with an SUV late Wednesday night, Manhattan Beach police said.

The male police officer was heading north on Sepulveda Boulevard, responding to an urgent call when the crash occurred on 9th Street at about 11 p.m., authorities said.

A 24-year-old woman was driving the SUV east on 9th street. Both the officer and the woman were taken to the hospital for care and observation.

One witness at the scene told ABC7News the cruiser was going so fast that it sounded like a pursuit.

"We had a lot of fast vehicles going down and we heard a huge boom," he said.

El Segundo Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash.
