Katie Holmes did not get any significant money or property in her divorce settlement with Tom Cruise because much of that had been decided by a prenuptial agreement, a source familiar with the negotiations said Monday.

"She was never after money but wanted to protect her daughter," the source said.

The negotiations were hammered out over the weekend and finalized just 11 days after Holmes had filed for divorce in New York. Cruise and Holmes agreed to keep the divorce private, believing that was in the best interests of their 6-year-old daughter, Suri.

Holmes would have only gone public if Cruise had taken a hard-nosed approach to her concerns regarding the child's upbringing, the source said.

Cruise, the source said, was also concerned about his daughter but knew that a public battle could damage his movie career and the Scientology religion he cares deeply about.

Cruise's longtime legal representative, Bert Fields, said in a statement that the movie star was "really pleased" that an agreement had been reached.

Holmes' New Jersey divorce lawyer, Jonathan Wolfe, said in a statement that the case had been settled and an agreement signed.

"We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life," Wolfe said.
