L.A. Now Live: Discuss Trutanich and his campaign for D.A.

May 11, 2012 |  6:00 am

Times staff writer Jack Leonard will join City Editor Shelby Grad for a discussion about Los Angeles City Atty. Carmen Trutanich's campaign to become Los Angeles County district attorney -- and his changing narrative about a run-in with gang members three decades ago.

The chat is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Friday. You can ask questions during the chat or submit them using the comment button above.

Leonard will discuss today's article about one of the heroic "Tru Stories" that Trutanich has used during his campaign. Nearly three decades ago, as a young prosecutor, Trutanich was investigating a murder in a South Los Angeles park when he was surrounded by gang members who fired at him.

"Even faced with the gang members, Carmen Trutanich wasn't afraid," says Jim Bell, retired district attorney's senior investigator, in a campaign video.

But Leonard reported that Trutanich has told different versions of that story over the years.

"It's one thing talking about it to you guys, one thing talking about it under penalty of perjury," Trutanich told The Times. "The stories are the same."
