3-year-old mauled by dog in Victorville

April 12, 2012 |  9:53 am

A 3-year-old girl was recovering Thursday after being mauled by a pit bull mastiff in Victorville.

Hayleh Harger was flown to Loma Linda University Medical Center after the attack on Easter Sunday. Doctors treated her with 100 stitches and staples in her head.

The animal had been taken to Harger's house by a neighbor, who was watching the dog for someone else.

"When I turned around, the dog was on top of her and he was growling," Harger's mother, Debra, told KTLA-TV. "I could barely see her underneath him. Almost her whole head was in his mouth.

"I just remember running toward her and cussing, and I just remember punching the dog in the face."

The dog was being held at the Devore Animal Shelter. Officials did not know who owned the dog and said it may have to be euthanize if the owner isn't found.
