March 18, 2012 |  8:58 am

A San Diego police officer shot a man attempting to stab the officer in a late-night incident Saturday, the Police Department said on Sunday.

Police went to a Southcrest neighborhood shortly before midnight after receiving calls about a man with a gun threatening people, according to Lt. Ernie Herbert.

As one officer attempted to interview a possible suspect, the suspect turned and attempted to stab the officer, Herbert said. The officer, described as a three-year veteran of the police department, fired at close range.

The wounded man, described as between 25 and 30 years old, was taken to a hospital.
