A 72-year-old man has been charged with murder in the strangulation of his 63-year-old wife at a Montebello senior center, Los Angeles County prosecutors said Tuesday.

Baghdo Hayrapetyan is accused of strangling his wife, Anahit, at the center in the 2000 block of West Whittier Boulevard on March 5 before he attempted to kill himself with a knife, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Hayrapetyan was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center in critical condition and remains hospitalized there. It was not immediately clear when he would be arraigned.

There were no witnesses to the incident, but it was being investigated as a domestic-violence murder, the department said in a statement. Anahit Hayrapetyan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Since January 2007, at least 14 slayings have been reported in Montebello, according to a Times Homicide Report database.
