Panorama High football player dies after party

March 5, 2012 |  8:20 am

Grief counselors will be at Panorama High School on Monday after a football player died over the weekend after attending a party where attendees were reportedly binge drinking.

Family and friends set up a makeshift memorial for 17-year-old Salvador Preciado, who died following a party on Friday night. Preciado was a senior and a standout football player at Panorama High.

Salvador's mother, Irma Guevara, found her son dead at a friend's house on Saturday. He had gone to a party the night before in the 800 block of Cedros Avenue in Los Angeles, where there was reportedly binge drinking going on.

"They just said, 'Oh, he is sleeping,'" Guevara told KTLA-TV. "And I just went to his body, and I found him dead. When I turned him around, he was already dead."

Guevara called 911, but it was too late.

Salvador's friends told Guevara her son had only a couple of beers. He went to the bathroom and when he came back out, someone had slipped something in his drink, they reportedly told her.

"Some girl saw that a boy came up and put something in Sal's drink," Guevara said. "And the thing is that's when he acted up all crazy. He started taking off his shirt, throwing his eyeglasses, and he started screaming, jumping and he was very hyper."

Police have not yet determined the cause of death. The Los Angeles County Coroner has said the teenager's death may have been accidental. Police are investigating the case as possible toxic poisoning from alcohol.

Salvador's family says they have heard a lot of versions of what went on at that party, and they are desperate to find out what really happened to him.

"Something happened at that party," Guevara said. "And somebody needs to come up and tell the truth, because somebody's covering up for somebody."

The Los Angeles Police Department Mission Division says it is conducting a death investigation at this point.
