Ski resorts welcome fresh blanket of snow

Mammoth welcomes fresh blanket of snow

A winter storm blanketed Southern California's ski resorts with a layer of fresh powder Monday morning.

"We're really happy to see white fluffy stuff falling from the sky," said Kim Hermon, marketing manager for Mountain High Winter Resort about the falling snow.

Monday's smattering of snow was the second in a series of storms to hit the area since Friday, the National Weather Service reported. Mountain High was expecting five inches of snow by the day's end and Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort reported 21 inches had fallen since midnight Sunday.

"We needed it," said Joani Lynch, communications director at Mammoth. "It was an unusually dry start to the season, so this is a very welcome storm."

Before the storm, Mammoth was operating at 30% capacity, relying heavily on man-made snow. With the four feet of snow that has fallen since Friday, skiers and snowboarders can get their fix on anywhere on just about all the lifts, though there is a catch.

"Because it is snowing so hard, some of our lifts are not open," Lynch said. The storm is supposed to taper off and clear up in the next couple of days, she said.

"As soon as we can get to it, we should have the whole mountain open."

Mountain areas in the Los Angeles area above 6,000 feet were expected to receive from four to eight inches of snow. As temperatures were anticipated to drop during the day, regions at 5,000 to 5,500 feet were also expected to see some flakes.

"People can expect winter driving conditions," meteorologist David Sweet said.

But true to the unpredictable nature of winter, the week should experience a full turnaround with temperatures reaching the mid-80s by the end of the week, Sweet said.
