Two men, including a Mammoth Lakes school board member who is also a surgeon at the High Sierra ski resort’s regional hospital, have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 14-year-old Santa Barbara girl, authorities said.

The arrests on Wednesday of Dr. Andrew C. Bourne and a second man capped a yearlong investigation, authorities said.

"This is a Santa Barbara Police Department investigation,” Mammoth Police Chief Dan Watson said in an interview. “We have assisted them in an ongoing criminal investigation in the serving of search and arrest warrants here in Mammoth Lakes.”

The suspects were being held on bail of $1 million each, authorities said.

Allegations that a local community leader allegedly raped a teenager spawned a wave of soul-searching in the small, close-knit community.

“We’re hoping that we’ll awaken from this nightmare,” said Mammoth Unified School District Superintendent Rich Boccia.

In a letter to school district staff members, Boccia wrote: "Today we are all being tested. I was alerted earlier this afternoon that one of our school board members has been arrested. There is an allegation of inappropriate behavior with a minor."

Bourne is board certified in surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery, according to biographical information on the Mammoth Hospital website.
