Fleeing inmate dies after fall from third floor of courthouse

SssAn inmate died when he fell three stories at the Long Beach Courthouse while trying to flee a bailiff, authorities said Thursday.

The man was being sentenced Wednesday for a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction when he was remanded into custody by a judge and handcuffed by the courtroom bailiff.

The inmate slipped from his handcuffs and ran from the courtroom, according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.

He was scaling the railing of a third-floor balcony outside the courthouse when he fell. The man, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at a hospital.
