2 charged with fatally shooting man who came to grandfather's aid

January 17, 2012 |  3:40 pm

Two men were charged Tuesday in the death of a 24-year-old man who was fatally shot as he ran to the aid of his  grandfather outside his Sun Valley home, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Evin Adonis Ortiz, 22, and Rene Ramirez, 29, were both charged with first-degree murder in the death of Danilo Morales, who was shot in the head and collapsed in the street Jan. 9.

Authorities say Ortiz and Ramirez are two of three men who robbed Manuel Flores outside a home in the 8100 block of Coldwater Canyon Avenue. Morales apparently ran outside after hearing his 68-year-old's grandfather's cries for help.

As the three men attempted to flee in a white sport-utility vehicle, one of them fired at Morales, killing him, authorities said.

The men, who appeared in Van Nuys Superior Court on Tuesday afternoon, have also been charged with attempted murder, assault with a firearm and second-degree robbery, prosecutors said. Both are being held without bail.

The investigation into the killing continues and police are seeking the third suspect.
