11-11-11 doesn’t mean much, mathematician says

Just in case a rush of last-minute superstition overtakes any amorous couples out there, don't try heading to the L.A. County Clerk's office on 11-11-11. They're closed for Veterans Day.

Rest assured, though, there are other options out there for people wanting to take advantage of the unusual confluence of numbers in today's date.

About 600 people are expected for the 11-11-11 Crystal Skulls World Mysteries Gateway in L.A. event. Promoter Kendall Ray Morgan promises Maya shamans from the Yucatan, along with ancient ceremonies, lectures and private sessions with 13 crystal skulls which, according to prophesy, will tell you how to save yourself before the world ends.

But what does it all mean? It's unclear.

Squared, the date becomes a palindrome (reads the same backward and forward): 111111 X 111111 = 12345654321.

In the ancient Maya calendar it was supposed to usher in a planetary rebirth, according to modern apocalyptica that has inspired any number of YouTube videos and TV segments.

Hari Jiwan, a teacher at Golden Bridge yoga studio in Hollywood, calls it a day of shifting cosmic direction that could go either way.

The shift brought the asteroid 2005 YU55 hurtling close to Earth and dumped the most autumn snow on New York City since the Civil War, he said.

During the last period of similar intergalactic tumult, Atlantis fell into the sea and Noah had his flood, Jiwan said.

His yoga studio is offering meditation classes at 11:11 a.m. and 1:11 p.m. to help usher students through the "magic entry gates."

Don't buy into the hype? Neither does UCLA mathematician Haruzo Hida.

"11-11-11, it doesn't mean much," he said. "I'm a numbers theorist, but we don't study meanings."

There may be no deep meaning, but at least for one local girl –- Olivia Jenkins of Laguna Beach –- it's her birthday.

She'll be turning 11.

Her parents say they've always noticed a strange kinship with the number 11. And so, on her birthday, she has decided to celebrate it at the Lincoln Memorial at 11:11 on 11/11/11, holding a digital clock, flanked by columns that appear as '11' and '11' on either side.
