Three-year-old girl killed by falling furniture in Encinitas

A 3-year-old girl was killed Tuesday when a piece of furniture fell on her in the garage of the family home in Encinitas, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said.

The child was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas by her mother and the mother's boyfriend, then airlifted to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego where she was pronounced dead.

Child abuse and homicide detectives were investigating, the sheriff's department said.
