Motorist killed after car plunges down mountainside

August 29, 2011 |  2:31 pm

A car plunged 350 feet down a mountainside along the Ortega Highway near the Lookout restaurant just after 11 a.m., killing the driver, authorities said.

Riverside County firefighters are on the scene of the fatal accident in the Santa Ana Mountains to assist the coroner in recovering the body, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Witnesses told CHP officials that they saw someone behind the wheel when the vehicle went over the side. Few details were available about what might have caused the incident.

The narrow, 30-mile twisting highway is one of the few connectors between Orange and Riverside counties.
