UC San Diego chancellor to step down next year
Marye Anne Fox, who has been chancellor of UC San Diego since 2004, announced Tuesday that she will step down from that position next June and return to teaching chemistry at the campus. The UC system will start a search for a successor in the fall, officials said.
Fox, who is 63 and previously was chancellor of North Carolina State University, oversaw much new construction and renovation on the La Jolla area campus and helped boost its academic prestige, particularly in the sciences and medicine. She also weathered a difficult period last year after an off-campus student party mocked African Americans and triggered a round of student protests about the small enrollment of blacks at UC San Diego.
