David Edward "Puck" Rainey, who gained notoriety as a cast member on one of the early incarnations of MTV's "The Real World," has been arrested and charged in a domestic violence case, authorities said Wednesday.

Rainey, 42 was arrested by Los Angeles police June 19 at a residence in Mission Hills in the 10000 block of Burnet Avenue and booked on suspicion of felony corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, according to police and prosecutors.

The LAPD brought the case to the Los Angeles city attorney for a misdemeanor spousal battery filing. Rainey remains in custody at the Los Angeles County Men's Central Jail in lieu of $30,000 bail and is due in San Fernando court July 6.

Rainey gained fame as an ornery bike messenger who appeared on the third season "The Real World" in San Francisco, which aired on MTV in 1994 and follows seven strangers who are picked to live together.

The charges filed by city prosecutors earlier this month are the latest in a series of Rainey's scrapes with the law and one of several domestic violence-related arrests dating back nearly a decade.

Prosecutors declined to file charges against Rainey in a 2003 domestic violence case but in 2009 he was sentenced to a year in Los Angeles County Jail after pleading no contest to charges of battery on his girlfriend.

That same year, Rainey pleaded no contest to felony possession of ammunition in Los Angeles County. He was placed on 3 years' probation.

In 2010, Rainey was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of driving under the influence after his car went off an embankment and landed upside-down in a creek in San Diego. Rainey was treated for multiple broken bones, including a fractured sternum and clavicle. His son, then 8 and riding with Rainey, also was injured.
