Grapefruits spill onto 5 Freeway as big rig overturns

May 25, 2011 |  7:43 am

Grapefruits spill onto the 5 Freeway.

A big rig carrying thousands of grapefruits overturned Wednesday on Interstate 5 in Castaic, spilling the citrus onto the freeway and causing three lanes to be closed for several hours.

No one was hurt in the 2 a.m. accident on the southbound lanes near Parker Road.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident. Two northbound lanes and one southbound lane were closed for cleanup, said Officer Francisco Villalobos.

They were expected to reopen about 8:30 a.m., he said.
