April 2, 2011 |  4:11 pm

The Ventura County Sheriff's Department announced that it was investigating the death of an inmate inside a pre-detention facility just after midnight Saturday.

The detainee, Gregory Turnquist, 43, of Ventura, was reported to be unresponsive by a cellmate about 1 a.m., authorities said.  A deputy went to investigate.

In a release on the matter the Sheriff's Department stated the following:

"The deputy immediately summoned additional staff, including a nurse, to assist with life-saving efforts. Paramedics were called to render additional aid. Once the paramedics arrived they conducted their own assessment and treatment of Mr. Turnquist. Mr. Turnquist was unable to be revived and was pronounced dead at approximately 1:15 a.m. by Ventura City Fire Department personnel. Per protocol, Sheriff’s Major Crimes investigators responded to assist with the investigation. The Medical Examiner’s Office responded and an autopsy is pending. Mr. Turnquist was arrested on March 30, 2011, for suspicion of criminal threats and Elder Abuse. Mr. Turnquist was scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court for arraignment on April 3, 2011."
