Small plane crashes in Riverside County; pilot killed

April 3, 2011 | 12:17 pm

A man was killed Sunday when a small plane he was piloting crashed in a remote area of northern Riverside County, authorities said.

The single-engine Piper Cherokee went down about 7:15 a.m. near Cherry Valley in an area of rugged hills southeast of Yucaipa, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

The aircraft burst into flames on impact.

The pilot was believed to be the only person aboard. His name and flight information were not released. Investigators from the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were en route to the scene, Gregor said.
