One suspect dead, two in custody after shootout with security guard in Chula Vista

April 4, 2011 | 12:37 pm

A burglary suspect died in an early-morning shootout with a security guard at a Chula Vista shopping mall, police said.

Two other suspects who fled were arrested within minutes. More than three dozen shots were thought to have been fired by the security guard and at least one of the suspects, police said.

The incident began about 7 a.m. at an Apple store at the Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista, a suburb south of San Diego.

Two male suspects smashed the window of the store and began grabbing items from display cases while a female suspect waited in a car, police said.

As the two men fled the store, a security guard ordered them to halt at gunpoint. Instead one of the men began firing at the guard, who returned fire, striking the suspect in the head, police said. He was declared dead at the scene.

The two others fled on foot and were arrested within minutes, police said.
