Man drowns at beach in Torrance

April 18, 2011 |  9:02 pm

A 19-year-old man drowned after he went swimming in cold water at the beach in Torrance, officials said Monday.

The man had no pulse and was not breathing when he was pulled from the water about 12:30 p.m. Friday, the Torrance Fire Department said.

Witnesses said the victim went into the ocean without a wetsuit, yelled for help and then went under, officials said.

He was pulled out by L.A. County lifeguards just south of the Torrance Beach parking lot, fire officials told The Times.

The man was taken by paramedics to Torrance Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His name was not released.
