L.A. community college elections: Incumbents take lead

March 9, 2011 |  1:18 am

Incumbents Mona Field and Miguel Santiago were holding on to large leads early Wednesday in the race for seats on the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees.

Field was ahead of four challengers for Office 1, and Santiago was leading Erick Aguirre for Office 7.

In other races, Steven Veres maintained a sizable lead over Joyce Burrell Garcia for Office 3 and Scott Svonkin had a comfortable advantage over six other challengers in the crowded race for Office 5.

The sixteen candidates are vying for four-year terms in the  882-square-mile, nine-campus district, which has come under scrutiny over its handling of a $5.7-billion bond-funded construction program.
