Knife-wielding man fatally shot while lunging at officers, San Diego police say

March 5, 2011 |  7:46 am

A 26-year-old man was shot and killed by San Diego police officers when he lunged at them with a large kitchen knife, police said Saturday.

Police were called about 1:30 a.m. to a home in the Clairemont neighborhood where a homeowner was having a dispute with her nephew. The woman said the nephew was armed with a knife and was threatening to stab her, police said.

The nephew was in a bedroom and had threatened to stab anyone trying to get him to come out. When officers asked him to come out, he instead came at them with the knife, said Lt. Kevin Rooney of the Police Department's homicide squad.

Two officers opened fire when the man lunged at them, Rooney said. The man was declared dead at the scene.

The officers are described only as 32-year and 16-year veterans of the department.
