A guard at the federal prison in downtown San Diego has been indicted on suspicion of having sex with an inmate, officials announced Friday.

Brandon McKinney, 34, a guard at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, is accused of having sex with a female inmate while on duty on July 20, 2010.

McKinney is charged with sexual abuse of a ward, which carries a maximum 15 years in prison. Federal Magistrate Judge William Gallo on Friday ordered McKinney held in custody until a bail hearing Tuesday.
