Eyewitness recounts Gardena High shooting on Twitter: 'I’m freaked out'

January 18, 2011 |  1:40 pm

A student on Twitter, who gave his name as Dan I., tweeted from the school in the frantic moments following the shooting. He tweeted in Korean that there was a loud noise that sounded like a bag of chips exploding, then a girl at the other end of the classroom collapsed, bleeding from her neck or her head.

"Someone just got shot in the classroom, I'm freaked out," he wrote in tweets laden with profanity in the minutes after the shooting. He wrote that he had switched seats earlier during class, and could have been hurt if he hadn't. He said it appeared to be a gun that accidentally went off from a student's backpack.

The student said 20 to 30 students were in the health class. He said he saw two students who appeared to be injured, one seriously from the gunshot wound in her neck, and the other seemed to have suffered a grazing wound. He said he and other students had fled to a different classroom, where students weren't being allowed to leave even to go to the bathroom.

He said he was still "dazed" and that it felt like he was watching a movie.
