Authorities investigating death of female inmate at Santa Ana jail

January 3, 2011 |  3:25 pm

The Orange County district attorney’s office is investigating the New Year’s Eve death of a Norwalk woman at a Santa Ana jail a day after her arrest on suspicion of drug possession, authorities said Monday.

Cynthia Kaye Drury, 46, was found unresponsive in her cell about 7:30 p.m. Friday by a sheriff’s deputy, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

She died about 8 p.m. after paramedics were called to the scene and attempted to revive her, according to the sheriff's statement.

The district attorney’s office is investigating, which is routine when someone dies in custody, said John McDonald, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

The district attorney’s office declined to comment on the case until the investigation was concluded.

Drury was arrested Thursday on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance. She was booked into  jail later that day.
