Coroner's officials reported eight killings in Los Angeles County between Oct. 26 and Nov. 1, bringing the year-to-date total to 525, according to data collected for The Times' Homicide Report database.

So far in 2010, only one week had a lower count, with seven homicides reported between June 28 and July 4.

Countywide homicide rates continue to remain lower than in previous years: There were 629 killings during the same period last year and 742 in 2008.

Last week's homicides began with the killing of Marlon Harvey, 38, in Westmont.

South L.A. sheriff's deputies responded to a "gunshot victim down" call on Oct. 26 about 7:30 p.m., according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department news release.

When authorities arrived, they found Harvey suffering from several gunshot wounds. Paramedics were called and he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to coroner's records, Harvey was shot in the back, neck and chest.

Witnesses said a black man walked up to Harvey and shot him with a handgun and then ran west on 95th Street, across Normandie Avenue, officials said.

Several days after Harvey was killed, Benjamin Houghton died from gunshot wounds he sustained five days earlier in the Broadway-Manchester neighborhood.

Authorities received a call reporting a shooting about 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 25, said LAPD Criminal Gang and Homicide Det. Kerri Potter.

When police arrived, they found Houghton, 40, shot several times, she said. He was taken to St. Francis Medical Center, where he remained until his death Oct. 30.

No arrests have been made in the case, Potter said, and there is no description of the assailant.

Although Houghton was not a gang member, the shooting appears to be gang-related, she said.

Similarly, Marcus Davis, 23, was shot and killed in Florence-Firestone.

Davis was visiting a home on Halloween about 10:15 p.m. when two men knocked on the door and shot him through a screen, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office.

Authorities were called, and Davis was taken to a hospital where he died 35 minutes later. According to coroner's records, he was shot several times.

Sheriff's homicide Det. Rich Ramirez, who is handling the investigation, said a witness described the assailants as black males.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the shooting was gang-related.
