Youth dies in Los Angeles County juvenile hall [Updated]

August 8, 2010 | 12:07 pm

A Los Angeles County probation youth suffered a fatal cardiac arrest after swimming in a probation hall pool in Sylmar late Saturday, according to probation department spokeswoman Kerri Webb.

The youth, whose name and age have not been released, got out of the pool at the Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall about 6:20 p.m. and said he felt ill, Webb said. When the boy collapsed, two probation staff members attempted CPR, as did ambulance personnel. Efforts to revive the boy failed, however, and he died.

Webb said the youth was under age 18, but that she could not release medical details about his case until his family was notified. Webb said the event was "devastating" for the hall, where mental health counselors were meeting with hall youths on Sunday.
