L.A. police fatally shoot alleged gang member after pursuit [Updated]

Los Angeles police officers shot and killed a suspected drunk driver Saturday evening in Sun Valley after the man opened fire on them following a pursuit, authorities said.

Deputy Chief Kirk Albanese said the officers “were met with an unprovoked lethal attack by a gang member.”

Police provided few details of the incident.

The shooting took place shortly after 6 p.m. near Penrose Street and Glenoaks Boulevard.

The suspect, in his 20s, was shot in the torso. He  was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, Officer Rosario Herrera said.

One officer was shot in the lower arm, police said. The other injured his wrist after a fall. Both were hospitalized in stable condition, Herrera said.

Police said the suspect began shooting when his car was parked.

[Updated at 11:12 a.m.: The suspect was 29 years old and is believed to be a local resident, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Gil Serafin said. The two officers involved in the incident were taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills where they were treated and released.]
