O.C. mom charged with dumping baby in trash bin faces trial

July 20, 2010 |  5:31 pm

A Laguna Niguel mother charged with attempting to kill her newborn girl by dumping her in a trash bin will face trial Wednesday, authorities said.

Shawn Kelli Sepulveda, 40,  who is also charged with child abuse, is scheduled to be tried in the Fullerton Courthouse, the Orange County district attorney's office said Tuesday. A time had not been determined.

Prosecutors said Sepulveda gave birth to the girl on Aug. 16, 2008, but had been trying to hide the pregnancy from her two children and husband because he was not the father. A few hours after the baby was born, Sepulveda allegedly abandoned the girl in a trash bin in her apartment complex, according to prosecutors.

The baby was discovered by Sepulveda's daughter. She told apartment workers and they called 911, prosecutors said. The girl is now in protective custody.
