Convicted sex offender captured in Venice

Daren Olsen DMV photo A convicted sex offender who discarded his GPS tracking device in Lancaster was captured Thursday in Venice, authorities said.

Daren Marvin Olsen was taken into custody by Los Angeles Police Department officers.

Olsen had been spotted by someone who saw his picture on  fliers, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Sheriff's detectives had received information that Olsen was in the Venice area and had distributed the fliers to  business owners near the beach.

Olsen had left his assigned area in the 42400 block of Sierra Highway in Lancaster. Sheriff's detectives were en route to the LAPD's Pacific Division on Thursday afternoon to arrest Olsen.
