San Diego Gas & Electric Co. will pay $14.4 million to the state and CoxCom Inc. will pay $2 million because of the role that downed wires played in sparking the disastrous 2007 fires that swept through northern San Diego County under a settlement approved Thursday by the California Public Utilities Commission.
The settlement was reached in late October after a PUC staff investigation into the cause of the wind-driven Witch, Rice and Guejito fires that destroyed more than 1,500 homes.
